Dave got up early today to get his car's registration, etc taken care of. Once he got home, we walked into town for "Musik for Kids." There was a man singing kiddy folk songs along with dancing and generally being silly. It was a nice way to spend an hour together today. Then, the boys had a good chunk of alone time outside until Jonathan had to take his nap, which didn't really last all that long. Dave got his hair cut and brought back pizza for lunch.
Then, we headed out to check out all the furniture stores going out of business. We stopped at Fortunoff (but it was all patio furniture there), Circuit City (gotta check into the TVs), and some other furniture store. We found a nice possible chair for the den, but we've gotta lay out the dimensions to make sure it's not too big.
Dave's giving Jonathan his bath now; then it's off to bed for him!

2009_02_27 Friday
Gosh was I motivated today! Of course, Jonathan woke up after 10am! Boy, that boy can sleep!
Once we got moving, I picked up a Freecycle box. Ironically, it was from a woman I went to college with! We weren't friends, but we had friends in common. What a small world!
Then, we headed up to our county Educational Center. It was awesome. It was a huge forest and nature conservancy. They are also tied in with the master gardeners and the 4-H club. The Center had some live animals (turtles, fish, etc) and lots of touch-me items from nature (skulls, feathers, shells, cones, etc). They have tons of classes, even for Jonathan's age. I got lots of flyers and am on some mailing list now. I can't wait. They have kiddy yoga that I'll consider, but better yet, an actual nature class that meets on Wednesday mornings (10am). I'm nearly certain we'll do that...assuming he won't sleep through it. They apparently have a story, do a craft, and have a walk in the woods. It sounded really neat.
We took a short-ish walk as well. It was beautiful. I took a few pictures. Jonathan found a tree with a "tunnel" so he peeked in, only to tip over and scratch his head up nicely. Awesome. lots of tears. We walked on and found a big stream, and he pointed out three ducks. They had a bat display, so he learned "bat." Then we walked back to the center. The docent there gave him a coloring book that he was super excited about.
So, now we're back home and he's napping. I expect him to be down for a few hours. We'll see.
So, I've figured out why I can't upload any photos to this blog; somehow it's linked to our Picasa photo album, which is full. So I can't upload new photos, even if I haven't uploaded them to Picasa! UGH. what a headache. Gotta get Dave to figure this one out. In the meantime, I'm switching to photobucket.com; will blast out some pix as soon as they're uploaded (and add the url to the right). I think the new site is:

2009_02_26 Thursday
Jonathan slept a bit later than usual today, but that's fine. It's an overcast, although warm day. I was inspired (somehow) to actually get dressed up today; I wore dress pants, a tank top, a cardigan, a scarf, and low heals! And, Jonathan looked mighty dashing himself.
So, after breakfast, we packed into the car, dropped off some mail, got $, and then headed to the Newark Museum. I really wanted to see their fire house exhibit, so why not today!? We got there a smidge early, but the docents went nuts over Jonathan. There were hundreds of school trips there and an elderly group as well. Once they opened, we headed to their mini-zoo to see a marmoset, snakes, fishies, a turtle, a trantula, 3 lizards, and a couple of other little beasts. Then, we swung by their money exhibit for kids. Since it was so quiet, the docent offered to let us play with some alphabet magnets and a board that is supposed to teach about the stock market listings. Jonathan loved all the letters. I swear he picked up an "M" and said "M"! same with "S". And, he stacked up all the "Os". We spelled out his name. It was fun.
Then, we did a bit for mom: traditional art paintings and a home of some sort.
THEN, the big finale. The fire house is a separate building, and I got conflicting answers on whether it was open. So, as we were leaving, I asked one last time if it was. The docent got on his walky-talky and ensured me that he had personally sent someone over to open it for us!!! How cool. We wandered through the olden day fire house, but the piece de resistance was an actual, modern fire truck (front) that kids can climb into and 'drive.' Jonathan got dressed in a fireman's suit with hat, and I plunked him into the driver's seat. He loved it! I showed him how to push the emergency lights, and he could barely contain himself. I have 3 photos of him. He was so unimpressed when I made him leave.
Of course, the visit messed up his nap schedule. We got home close to 2, so I put him down right away, and he slept until 5:30 (with no lunch). I gave him a 1/2 peanut butter sandwich, and we ran out the door to get Dave. When we got home, the boys played outside pushing a ride-on bus up and down the street to get some energy out.
After dinner, I gave Jonathan a bath and put him to bed so Dave could finish up some work. What a disaster! He wailed and wailed. I went in a few times, and he kept throwing his pacifier at his bed. Dave finally went in around 10, and Jonathan was wide awake. They played for a little bit more, and he finally went down. Guess mommies shouldn't put babies to bed. :o)

2009_02_24 Tuesday
Today is another freezing cold day. And, since Jonathan didn't get up until after 9:30, we couldn't really go to our weekly playgroup, which was hosted inside this time. Instead, we had a leisurely breakfast; Jonathan is really loving eggs in the morning these days.
Then, we skiddaddled to the local IKEA. I had the great idea that he could play in their famous ball pit for awhile. As it turns out, kids have to be potty trained and a certain height to go inside. Boy, was he disappointed...me too. So, we loitered around the store for awhile; he pointed out all sorts of animals in the kiddy bedding section. We had a nice, cheap, Norwegian lunch too. They have a neat set-up; the cafe overlooks Newark Airport, so we watched tons of planes land right near us. Plus, it's right over I-95, so we saw lots of truuuuuucks pass by. AND, there's a cargo railroad next to I-95, so we saw trains too! I hit the jackpot for this little boy!! And, like all other IKEAs, it was impossible to find the exit, let alone get out of there without buying all sorts of junk. I managed to keep it under $10, though. One wise purchase was a set of plastic plates for him.
When we got home, the cleaning ladies hadn't come yet. That was a bummer because Jonathan was pooped, and I had hoped to have timed it just right. Of course, as I was putting his slippers on, they came. So, we played in the den for a few extra minutes while they tackled his room. Bugger's been sleeping for a good three hours now.
Meanwhile, I've been searching around for some freelance gigs. Nothing great out there right now beyond what I've already got going. So, I'll maximize on those.

2009_02_23 Monday
Today was the lamest of the lame days. Not only was it cold, but the wind never let up. So, that sort of cancelled out any outside plans. Museums aren't open on Mondays, so that cancelled that out. Instead, we just stayed inside and hung out, doing nothing special in particular. Jonathan napped like a champion, so I had time to rebuild and restock our make-shift pantry in the dining room and finish off some freelance gigs before he woke up. We managed to walk into town around 5 (that was probably a mistake since it was so cold), but that negated us from picking up Dave an hour later. What a stinky day; I just never felt like I warmed up!
OH! After writing about raising kids bilingually, I sort of kicked myself in the rear to speak German to Jonathan. It's still very awkward for me, but I'm trying to be more aware of it. I speak German to him on the changing table and always say "danke" (thank you) after he does whatever I'm asking him to do. At some point this week, after I said "auf stehen" (which means "stand up") to pull his pants up, he said "danke!" It was pretty cool. I'm trying to encourage that beyond the changing table now too. We'll see how it goes.

2009_02_22 Sunday
I treated the family to breakfast out today: at the bagel shop in town. Seemed like nearly every table there was full of kids, so that was good. And, on the way home, Steve/Vicky called from our house phone! They had arrived early and gotten into the house. So, we hightailed it home to see them. The boys had a date while we ladies had a baby shower for Dave/Steve's cousin, Jean, to attend. As it turns out, they actually live close to us, but the shower was nearly an hour away at an Italian restaurant. my luck. We sat with Jen and Cathy, so we had lots of time to catch up. Jean scored massive loot; we were all wondering how she was going to get it all home. maybe a few trips.
The boys had spent the afternoon at our local zoo. We arrived back home to find the men slaving away in the kitchen. Steve and Dave were making shrimp, home-made chicken nuggets, noodles for the kids, and my pesto with raviolis for dinner for us. The little men were wrapping up their naps. Bobby and Catherine completely exhausted Jonathan, who ran around the house chasing after them. What a nice, relaxing evening. I had some clean-up in the kitchen, but that's fair if I didn't have to cook. wahoooo!!

2009_02_21 Saturday
Ack! where does all the time go?!
We hit the diner this morning to visit with Donna and Betty. Jonathan is an absolute riot with them now; he's blowing kisses and waving, etc. Jonathan refused to nap today; he's been crying and babbling in his crib for nearly three hours now. that's frustrating. In hindsight, I think Jonathan must have slept a little.
We're supposed to head out to see a friend of Dave's and his family soon. Dave and Howie rode the same train coincidentally months ago. They hadn't seen each other since high school. So, we finally made it out to meet his family. They only live about 20 minutes away from us. So, we had a nice dinner with them and great company. They have two young boys, so Jonathan was loving it. He crashed out in the car on the way home. He was exhausted.
Once he went to bed, we watched Baby Mama with the girls from SNL. Funny, but dumb.

2009_02_18 Wednesday
I picked up a handful of pots from Freecycle, so I can work on my brown thumb. I have ambitions of planting flowers in them to line the front steps. we'll see.
That afternoon, we had our first playdate at Sharon's house. She's the newest addition to our small group. We had a really nice time. And, it's nice that she lives within walking distance of us too!

2009_02_17 Tuesday
Today was an awesome day! We went to Kidz Village a few towns away for the morning. It was a huge indoor playroom with about 10 different nooks: 50s style diner, grocery store, construction site, movie theater, salon, ballet studio, etc. and a Discovery Zone-esque climbing area. Jonathan had a really good time, and I enjoyed it too. I have pix.

2009_02_15 Sunday
Another weekend nearly done. On Friday night, we saw some friends while picking Dave up from the train station. They offered to babysit Jonathan on Saturday if we wanted to do something. We had breakfast at the diner that morning. Oh, and I gave Dave an Ipod (gift idea: iTunes!!); he gave me an emerald necklace/bracelet. Very cool gift exchange this year!!! So, we wavered on taking them up on their offer, but then we decided to go for it and see Slumdog Millionaire in town. We dropped Jonathan off at Jen/Greg's and he didn't even look back, just ran into see their twin kids and started playing. So, with his tears averted, we strolled into town. Great movie; I can see why it's an Oscar nominee. We brought them a choco cake as a thank you (and they gave us 1/2 back!), and Jonathan barely noticed my return. He screeched in delight when he saw 'dadddeeee'. Jen said he didn't even whimper for us. And, he ate a full dinner (quesadillas, which I'll have to try now!) with them, an hour before his normal dinner time (and not 2 hrs after his late lunch!). man, what an eater he is!!!
Today, we had plans to see Joey/Amanda/Julia/? but they cancelled. Invited Sarah, but she's moving/unpacking. Marcy/Josh/Abby/Sam were in town, so they came by to see the house, for lunch, and to hang out for a bit. The kids weren't feeling too great, but it was really nice to see them. I just finished making ham & cheese manicoti casserole for dinner (yes, at 3:30), so now I just need to cook it and pack up any leftovers! yummy.

2009_02_12 Thursday
Jonathan slept until 9 today, so maybe we're back on track again.
Jonathan and I went to the diner b/c I was feeling lazy about making breakfast. Behind me sat a woman and a man, waiting for another man to arrive. Long story short, it turns out that they were having a business meeting about Patch, the company I've been writing for (the bilingual story and all the store interviews)!!! So, I sheepishly interrupted them to tell them I was eavesdropping and am a writer for their site. They thought it was great. I'm just glad that I was half-way presentable, since the first man is the editor for our town and wants to talk to me about doing more writing for them. He claims to recognize my name (who knows if he was just being nice). What a small world!! I also submitted my second essay -- on au pairs -- for them today as well.
When we got home, I called Animal Control again, since we still have not received our trap back. He said he'd drop it off today and set it up for us. I was sceptical, but it did arrive around lunch time.
I also called to be sure we got the cat food order placed. Poor guys have been relegated to tuna fish for the past few days since we ran out of cat food, although maybe they prefer that.
Rather than visiting the Newark Museum today, we opted for the Liberty Science Center, since our reciprocal membership there ends on Feb. 23. Jonathan had a blast in the rice pit again. He seems to love shifting rice from one bucket/shovel/measuring cup/etc to another, although NOT in his hands for some reason. We only had an hour to spend before they closed, but parking was free! So, we did about equal time with the rice and the "eat or be eaten" animal exhibit. This time, I got pictures.
Maybe next week, we'll try the Newark Museum again. I want to try out their firehouse exhibit and see another one about using bugs as art. We'll see if it happens.
We got home and he took a short nap. He was pooped. And, he was up just in time for us go get daddy in the wagon.
It was a very good day.

2009_02_11 Wednesday
Jonathan seems to be getting up around 8 consistently now. That's a bummer since he was so consistent with 9 earlier. Even still, 8 isn't all that bad.
Our beloved hunter scored a larger critter over night: an opossum! He was pretty small and very scared. Kinda cute in an ugly sort of way. I called Animal Control first thing this AM, and he was gone by noon...so was our cage. I finally tracked down AC again, and he's going to return our cage 'first thing in the morning.' That way, if we do have a second visitor, my hunter can go after it too.
Jonathan and I drove into town to get Dave's dry cleaning. I had planned on going to the Newark Museum today, but we got started too early, and the museum opens at noon. Instead, we opted for the zoo. It's a gorgeous day, so it was nice to be outside, and we barely needed coats! Jonathan really liked the peacocks/hens. Many of the animals are still inside, but we did see a handful anyway. The whole barnyard was out and in action, so that was fun. We also saw two wolves and a black bear. There were two cougars sunning themselves, and he called them 'big cats,' which I was impressed with. Similarly, he called the elk a 'big deer.' And, he was awestruck by the merry-go-round (has zebras, elephants, giraffes, and other more exotic animals), so we may give it a try next time. It will either be a crazy hit, or a massive disaster.
Cleaning ladies are here now...an hour early. Of course, I just put Jonathan down for a nap. oh well. Sharon and Aylin and their kids are coming by around 4 today to play. Wonder if we should just meet at a park since it's so nice, although it's rediculously muddy with all the snow/ice melting.

2009_02_10 Tuesday
Happy 19 Month Birthday to Jonathan! what a day, actually it was pretty uneventful.
We did, however, catch our first animal in the raccoon trap. It was a squirrel, who was pissed to be there. Dave drove him to a lovely park where he'll be much happier. Regardless, we're not sure that he was the culprit who's been scratching in our ceiling. Dave reset it with more peanut butter, so we'll see who we get tomorrow!
Oh, I keep meaning to report that Jonathan can put his own coat on. He does the lay-it-on-the-floor-upside-down-and-flip-it-over-the-head trick with ease!! And, today, he laid down on my back so we could play horsie. Now, he rolled right off, but with giggles. And, we also did the hands-between-the-legs-and-flip trick too. He seemed to like that as well.
I'm doing my first e-bay bidding. Can't tell you what it's for since it's a gift for Dave. Can't risk him reading this (unless I lose it). It sure is addicting, though! Whaooo! I actually won the item on the second try. And, being a newbie, I completely goofed up. I nearly bought two of the same thing b/c I didn't realize I had already won one! I had to rescind my second offer with apologies. It may even arrive before V-Day!!! How exciting!

2009_02_09 Monday
Oh gesh. Here we are a solid week since I've managed to post! where does the time go!? Oma was here for four wonderful days. Dave was in Maine for a couple of those on work, so that made her visit that much better. I had a nail pulled out of my front tire and plugged. exciting. Our interior decorator came by on Thursday to give me guidance on what to do next. I've got a massive To-Do list going now, and we'll chip away at it little by little. On Saturday, I took the cats to get their rabies shots. The town offers it for free, so I thought I better jump on that. I'm planning on walking the forms to town hall today since it's beautiful out. Maybe we'll stop by the zoo afterward.
We are nearly certain that we have a raccoon squatting in between our first and second floors in the front of the house. After listening to YouTube, we're pretty sure it's not a squirrel. So, after getting three quotes from exterminators, who also couldn't identify the animal, we went to Home Depot and got a trap. I also talked to the city Animal Control Officer, who basically said that if it is a squirrel, to drive it to our local forest and let him go. If it's a raccoon, he'll come and pick it up (b/c of rabies risk). We went to dinner in town with Dave's buddy Sferra, who is in town for work, and his family. That was really nice. Then, the men set the trap last night, but nothing caught this morning. So, that's a ton of fun.

So it seems that the Hardwick men really like 3am. Jonathan was up for no good reason. He was also up a few more times befor that, but around 3, I decided I couldn't keep getting up for him. It's tough to ignore now that he actually calls out for "mommy!" So, after no more than 10 minutes, he cried it out (aka CIO, in the industry!). He woke up slightly later than usual. We had a small breakfast and then dropped my car off at the local fix-it shop. I think there's a hole in my front passenger tire. I hope they can plug it. Then we circled through town for $ and a coffee. I let Jonathan run down our street to get some energy out, but there's still ice in some areas, so that wasn't a fun discovery for him. He's down for a nap now. While he's down, I need to finish off my essay on bilingualism since it's due in tomorrow. I'd love to continue my organizing streak from yesterday; makes me feel more settled...and we can't wait to see Oma tonight!

2009_02_01 Sunday
Jonathan woke up at 7:30 today. that wasn't very nice of him. Poor Dave was up past 3am working, so the JDHs played for awhile to give Dave some down time. Jonathan's appetite seems to have returned with a vengence; he had a full bowl of oatmeal with raisins along with a couple of blueberries and a slice or two of cheese. whew. We played in the new den for a bit too, dumping baskets out and refilling them. I put him back down for a nap around 11.
Was uploading pix from yesterday and have hit a limit with Picasa. So, now I need to figure out what to do. Not sure that any are visible now.
Dave spent the better part of today trying to resolve his work crisis. So, I busied myself with getting rid of a few more boxes from the move and organizing the house a bit. While both were somewhat little items, I sure felt good to get some things put away properly. I also pulled out our nice stereo and hooked it up (successfully, no less!) in the new den. I'm really liking that room a lot, and I spent a little bit actually reading in there.
We went to a pre-Super Bowl party at one of Dave's college buddies' home. We only stayed for about a hour. On the way home, we noticed that Jonathan is starting to string together three syllables, specifically 'big tunnel." That seems to be a pretty big step for our little man. Guess he'll be chattering away soon. I made a quick and easy dinner once we got home, bathed Jonathan and got him ready for bed, and drove Dave to the airport. He called once he landed: uneventful trip.
